Karnataka Verdict: Did Democracy Emerge Victorious Today?

Karnataka Verdict: The Karnataka crisis reached a new level today as Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa resigned before the much-anticipated floor test. With his resignation, the drama ended whether ruling BJP had the numbers to back up majority government or not. B.S. Yeddyurappa’s resignation with one and half days of becoming chief minister reminded of Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s resignation in 1996. Now the Congress – JD(S) alliance can definitely proceed to form Karnataka government. Anyhow the highlight of the sequence of political events is, whether democracy has triumphed in Karnataka or not. People of Karnataka ‘didn’t’ vote for the corrupt Siddaramaiah government and it was BJP who got the popular support. Is democracy all about the numbers? This is something which is going to question all the people of Karnataka in the days to come.

From a bigger perspective, it remains to be seen how to do Congress and JD(S), two parties with contrasting ideologies for a stable government at the center. Let’s not forget that former prime minister HD Deve Gowda’s son Kumaraswamy doesn’t have a clean and transparent image either. In all probability, an interim election doesn’t look very far either. The Karnataka BJP unit can definitely look positives from the ongoing situation. If they can translate the sympathy for BJP into votes in the Lok Sabha Election early next year, it will definitely have good purchase in 28 seats. So it isn’t a bad day for BJP either. Even if BJP had won today, they would have faced criticism over horse trading. Thus the outcome of the Karnataka Election is definitely making more options ahead of Lok Sabha Elections next year.
