Ayyappa Deeksha Row: Memo Issued to SI Krishnakant Sparks Protest at DCP Office
Ayyappa Deeksha controversy is gaining momentum in Hyderabad, after a memo was reportedly issued to Kanchan Bagh Sub-Inspector Krishnakant for wearing Ayyappa Mala during duty hours.
The incident triggered strong reactions from Ayyappa devotees, Hindu organisations, and BJP leaders, who demanded immediate withdrawal of the memo.
On Tuesday, a large number of Ayyappa Swamis reached the South East Zone DCP Office to protest against the action taken by Additional DCP Srikant, who stated that wearing Ayyappa Mala while on duty violates departmental rules and suggested that officers observing Deeksha should apply for leave.
However, as higher officials were not present at the South East Zone office, the devotees sat inside the premises and continued their protest, demanding a clear explanation and cancellation of the memo.
The issue quickly went viral on social media, with netizens questioning:
- Why are rules different when it comes to Hindu practices?
- Why is wearing Ayyappa Mala seen as a violation, when police often support other religious festivals with gifts, food and arrangements?
Hindu organisations argued that this step has hurt Hindu sentiments and demanded that the Telangana Police Department issue transparent, uniform guidelines on religious observances for personnel.
Devotees emphasized that Ayyappa Deeksha is a matter of faith, and no rule should discriminate between religions. They urged higher authorities to intervene immediately and provide a fair, balanced explanation.
The situation is expected to develop further as more groups prepare to join the protest.
