🔥 Congress & Naxalism: A History of Creation, Growth, Ban… and Today’s Support? 🔥
Congress & Naxalism: From Birth to Ban — Why the Double Standards Today?
Naxalism, also known as Maoism, is one of India’s most violent left-wing extremist movements. Over the decades, thousands of civilians, police personnel, and public representatives have been killed.
But one political fact remains constant:
👉 Naxalism was born, grew stronger, and claimed
the highest number of lives during Congress rule.
👉 And ironically, today Congress appears to be offering indirect support to the same movement.
Why this contradiction?
📌 How Naxalism Originated Under Congress Rule
The Naxalbari uprising began in 1967 in West Bengal—during a Congress-led political climate.
Administrative failures, poor land reforms, and neglect of rural distress helped create the ideal environment for extremist ideology to flourish.
📌 How Naxalism Strengthened During Congress Governments
Through the 1970s, 80s, and 90s—periods dominated by Congress at the Centre—Maoist groups rapidly expanded.
Key reasons:
- Government failure in tribal and rural development
- Corruption in the local administration
- Lack of justice for oppressed communities
- Weak policing and poor political will
All of this helped Naxalism gain strong ground across several states.
📌 Most Deaths Took Place Under Congress Rule
Data repeatedly shows that the highest casualties—police forces, civilians, CRPF jawans—occurred during Congress regimes.
The movement claimed thousands of lives as Congress struggled to control the situation.
📌 Congress Itself Banned Maoists
Between 2004–2006, the UPA government (led by Congress) officially banned Maoist organisations in India.
Meaning: The party that allowed its rise was also the party that outlawed it.
❗Then Why is Congress Supporting Them Today?
This is where the contradiction becomes evident.
🟥 Congress leaders’ statements
- Some leaders describe Maoists as “social revolutionaries.”
- Others openly sympathize with their so-called struggle.
- In several states, Congress has taken a soft approach on Naxalism for electoral benefits.
🟥 Political Alignment for Votes
Experts have noted that Congress gains politically in some regions where Maoists influence local voting behaviour.
❓The Big Questions
If Congress:
- Created the conditions for Naxalism
- Allowed it to grow
- Failed to control its violence
- Saw thousands die under its watch
- And finally banned it
👉 Why is the same party now offering indirect support to Maoists?
👉 Did its ideology change?
👉 Has Congress forgotten the leaders and officers killed by Naxalites?
👉 Is this soft approach just vote-bank politics?
🔍 The Nation Deserves Clarity
Naxalism is a national security threat—NOT a political tool.
Any ambiguity or double standards by a major political party endangers the nation.
The people of India must ask:
👉 What exactly is Congress’ stand on Naxalism today?
